When the Great German ship Bismarck sinks to its doom all the crew are left to die or attempt the perilous swim to safety, Broken legs make it even harder. Some survivors are taken aboard a British ship to prisoners of war but most are regrettably left to die. Walter is one of the lucky few to survive and is sent to England.

He now must adapt to a new way of life among the seaside settlement of Sussex, and there he is greeted with a host family who have agreed to look after him and his friend Manfred. But friendship does not come easily in the war especially when you are from the enemy.
